[Video] Flash Symbian Belle on your Nokia N8 Tutorial

21 Aug

Nokia N8 Belle

Since Belle is so “hot” now eventhough it’s still in BETA. So I would like to share bits some of my tutorial to help those who is eager to try Symbian Belle on their device. Take notes, the tutorial only works on Nokia N8 since the firmware is only suitable for this device.

Preperation:

1. Backup all your important data
2. You need this 3:

  • Phoenix – get it here
  • Belle Beta Firmware – get it here
  • Anna Firmware – get it here

Video Tutorial:

Guide:

1. After download Phoenix, Belle Beta Firmware and Anna Firmware, install Phoenix first, then extract both Belle Beta Firmware and Anna Firmware to your desktop.
2. Copy RM-596 folder (including everything inside), then paste it into this directory “C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\”.
3. Run Phoenix applications, go to File>Open Product, then search RM-596 by using the filter. Found it, select then click Ok.
4. Connect your phone via USB Cable in Ovi Suite mode
5. Click Flashing>Firmware Update, then select the variant supposedly “Product code: 0598797. Description: china_prc_dark_grey”,  click OK.
6. Check “Dead Phone USB Flashing” and then click Options.
7. Delete both RM596_APE_ONLY_ENO_11w15_v0.148.fpsx and RM-596_M025.44.emmc.fpsx.
8. Change the:

  • RM-596_022.014_79.92_prd.core.fpsx  to RM-596_111.010.0606_79u_prd.core.fpsx
  • RM-596_022.014_28.01_Chinese_PRC_79.92_prd.rofs2.fpsx to RM-596_111.010.0606_13.01_MEA_A_79u_prd.rofs2.fpsx
  • RM-596_022.014_C01.01_PRC_79.92_prd.rofs3.fpsx to RM-596_111.010.0606_C04.01_MEA_1_79u_prd.rofs3.fpsx
  • RM-596_022.014_U02.01_79.92.uda.fpsx to RM-596_111.010.0606_U07.01_79u.uda.fpsx

9. Click OK
10. Click Refurbish,  then follow the instruction as below:

  • Disconnect USB Cable.
  • Press Power Button at least 8 seconds.  ##I highly recommend you press a little longer than 8 seconds till you feel your phone vibrates 2 time
  • Connect USB Cable. (it will immediately recognize your device)
  • Click OK

11. Phoenix will start flashing Belle firmware for your phone. You may need to wait a little while though
12. After flashing Belle firmware is done, it will appear a SUCCESS message. We’re still not finish here yet.
13. If your phone boot differently than the previous firmware like Anna/Symbian^3, means you have successfully installed Belle firmware into your phone.
14. After setting up your Nokia account (or just skip it like in the video), do a hard reset using *#7370# in order to reduce the potential of bug (since it’s still in BETA).
15. Restore your phone with the backup you have made
16. Then have fun with your Belle :-)

Problem you might face:

In case if the flashing didn’t work out, try again from step 1. This may happen because you did not press power button long enough till the phone vibrate 2 times like in step 10. If that’s not the case, it might be that you did not install Nokia Ovi Suite or update the driver inside your pc.

If your phone wont start/bricked, Press Power buttons like more than 10 second, then press power button again so the phone could start again. If this doesn’t work, try 3 hard reset button: Hold “Volume Down + Camera Key + Menu Key” and press power button until your phone vibrates.

How it would be after flashing:

*Do it at your own risk

my phoenix says…Instal a nokia dongle !whats that ?

    • hazelnuts23 August 21, 2011 at 9:55 pm #

I thinkit means u need to install the appropriate driver for your phone. Did u install ovi suite?

hey i do all the steps it dosnt work my n8 died and its a black screen with a white nokia and i cant do the Warning: Unable to communicate to product after flashing

      • ABHIJeeT January 31, 2012 at 1:04 pm #

hey i too hav a same prob flashing is over but my n8 is dead and every tym i switch on it a black blue screen appears with nokia in white blinking abt 3 to 4 tyms n again found itself dead plzzz comment……….

  2. freddywigo August 22, 2011 at 5:17 pm #

I couldn’t do the flash in dead mode so I did it in “connected mode”. Instead of selecting no connection, select the usb which the phone is connected to, then do the firmware update without dead phone selected…worked fine for me :)

I had the “official realese” of anna installed before flashing. Used the chinese anna files to put into the products folder and then edited the files to belle as described in tutorial videos…thx guys!!!

  3. Saad Madeh Hawas August 23, 2011 at 11:32 am #

great ui just greattttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt better than the official anna anna has nothing great in it except for the visual icons and dats easy to get wid the help of themes

why download symbian belle to n5800xpressmusic

  5. luqman August 24, 2011 at 10:45 pm #

can the same technique be applied to nokia c6-01 running on symbian anna?

  6. Vil Coyote August 25, 2011 at 12:42 am #

Same as freddywigo. Starting from N8 (059C3H1) with official Orange dg FR 013.016 (pretty old PR1.1). Fed up with Orange apps as well as “old fashion” PR1.x…
Phoenix in “connected mode” (not “dead usb phone”), and followed instructions.
    Back to work now !!!

  7. thomthom August 25, 2011 at 4:02 am #

Great tutorial! Works like a charm! Now my Rogers (Canada) phone is unbranded and no more bloatware. Thanks Eh!

  9. sebaast August 25, 2011 at 3:56 pm #

    Hello
I have an unbranded N8 (France) , and received Anna via OTA this morning; Which steps do i have to skip in your procedure to installe “Belle” ? Thanks and “bravo” for this great job

    • hazelnuts23 August 25, 2011 at 3:59 pm #

You don’t have to skip, works on Anna too

      • sebaast August 25, 2011 at 7:35 pm #

oops ! sorry. i have to download (and reinstall) Anna again as well or only Belle ?

      • hazelnuts23 August 25, 2011 at 11:48 pm #

@Sebaast – If you meant reinstall Anna through ovi suite, then No. If you ask whether u should download one or both file, then yes yo u have to download both anna and belle. after download 3 of this: Phoenix, Belle Beta Firmware and Anna Firmware, follow the guide.

  10. sebaast August 25, 2011 at 4:03 pm #

  16. Conor August 26, 2011 at 9:46 am #

I’ve just followed this and sucessfully flashed my UK N8 to the Middle East firmware available on NaviFirm. Use the Symbian Anna firmware in the link above but substitute the Belle beta for mea_omu_dg available from NaviFirm. Hope this helps anyone who wants Belle but can’t get it in their country yet

    9. Click OK

** THE RM-596_111.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx FILES ARE FOUND IN THE ‘BELLE BETA FIRMWARE’.

So change the path when you click on Edit. The source file should be in the Desktop.

  26. Larppa August 31, 2011 at 7:06 pm #

    Okay…

I bought my N8 From London update it with ovisuite to Anna I have pick up scandi language pack thru navifirm plus and phoenix. Now I try to upgrade it to belle with tutorial and files found here. When phone suppose to start flash phoenix inform me that it was not able to find some file and it was not able to start flash..

After that phone stopped install apps from ovi, don’t find available update list (ota) and ovi says it should install two anna update’s to phone.. stil can’t do it. If I just try to re-install 022.014 there always something goes wrong in the end..

Phoenix don’t regonize the phone.. Neather DP1.0 or DP2.0 not found or the product can’t be identified when I scan it and try to get product information out..

Any ideas how to procceed? Phone work some what okay just not aple to install new or old apps from ovi.. some error comes every times in the end..

  27. Michail-Aggelos Veranoudis August 31, 2011 at 11:25 pm #

thanks guys!!! but i m waiting for a greek pack!!!

  28. kenosando September 2, 2011 at 3:15 am #

Worked like a charm. One word of advice, though, is after you hold the power button for 8 seconds, and then plug the USB in, make sure the background window begins to communicate with your phone before pressing OK, else it will just sit there for a few minutes, then error out, making your repeat step 10 over. The hard reset is actually taking longer than the flashing did. Still in the process now, but I already love the look and feel!!!!

  29. sebaast September 2, 2011 at 3:16 pm #

    @Menno Van Ginkel
i finally did flash it. The issue was coming from USB connection with Phoenix or Windows i guess.
Think you have to click on ok as soons as usb cable is reconnected. If you wait too much and windows pop up displayed then too late

    • Menno van Ginkel (@Menno_vanGinkel) September 3, 2011 at 2:04 am #

What the heck… I recharged my phone the whole night, and the next morning it just booted Anna 24.001 like i didnt spend those 8hours+ trying to fix it… LOL.
now, lets flash it to Bella :)

  30. m0shef September 5, 2011 at 1:00 am #

How can I flash my C6-01 with belle

  43. YearOne September 24, 2011 at 8:06 pm #

I already install nokia ovi suite and phoenix.. But once i run the phoenix, the error massage came out says that “Install a nokia dongle”.. is there any problem with my computer or the phoenix software itself? currently run on windows 7 Ultimate.

  44. Aayush Agarwal September 25, 2011 at 1:16 am #

I updated to the August 30 2011 Asia-Pacific build of Belle using your method.

I did not use Dead Phone Method. I kept it on during flash. Phoenix programmed the Phone but then it was unable to verify, as it was unable to communicate
So I thought my phone was bricked. But I was able to switch it on and Belle was there!!!

It is light, and total VFM.

When Belle gets released, and I want to update to my region (whichever region India is located in), what do I do?

  45. YearOne September 25, 2011 at 3:05 am #

Okey.. Belle Is done… Thank you so much!!

P.S. I’m not complaining, as it says “do it at your own risk”..

    • hazelnuts23 October 1, 2011 at 3:09 pm #

      Press power button >10 seconds.

If that doesn’t work, try charge your battery for 30 minutes and press power button till on again.

If not, you have to send your phone for warranty

  54. jCube October 7, 2011 at 11:30 pm #

I’m not sure what happened in my situation. I had PR1.2 installed before i performed the update. The whole flashing process went through fine, but under device manager i have 022.014.28.01 as my software version. I believe this is ‘anna’. Why did belle not get installed? Or do i have to do it again.

  55. Jing October 10, 2011 at 12:05 am #

I could not find Mail for Exchange anymore after I flashed my N8 to Belle. Can anybody help? Thanks a lot.

    • Jing October 10, 2011 at 5:35 am #

Never mind, I found it. The name is changed to Exchange ActiveSync. Great Tutorial by the way. Thanks a lot!

  56. Jing October 10, 2011 at 8:03 am #

Do you guys get 6 home screens? I still have only 3 of them. I am wondering if it is because the load is beta or I have missed some setting on the device. Thanks.

  57. paola October 12, 2011 at 6:45 am #

Flashing SUCCESS without “pressing the power button for 8 seconds” til the phone disconnects the battery.. Also successful without checking the “Dead phone USB flashing”… I followed the rest of the steps and I have yet to encounter a bug. The UI is much smoother and nicer! I will be testing the rest of the features this week and I will try and report back.

  58. ED October 13, 2011 at 6:48 am #

i get a pop up after clicking flahs update… neither dp1.0 or 2.0 was found any help??

  59. mike October 14, 2011 at 11:02 am #

why is there only 3 homescreens…. is there suposed to be 6….

  60. Jing October 15, 2011 at 10:39 pm #

Have you guys noticed the front button is now doing nothing? So basically you can not do multitasking anymore with this beta load.

    • Jing October 15, 2011 at 11:00 pm #

A hard reset fixed the problem.

  61. Jing October 16, 2011 at 12:50 am #

I have just noticed there is already newer version leaked which comes with 6 home screen.

  72. Ramone November 11, 2011 at 9:20 pm #

I downloaded the files and did it exactly as the instructions said and now when you push the power button my phone, the nokia sign comes on the screen then goes off and comes back on again about three or four times, as if trying to power up but fails and tries again, then it just powers off. I can’t do nothing with this thing!! I had the Anna update, the official one from nokia on there for a couple weeks prior to this.
I tried the three button reset but nothing happens differently. It just comes up with the nokia sign and goes through that on of slow flashing nokia on the display then powers off. It doesn’t matter how long I hold the keys for.
Is there ANYTHING else I can do..?? I’ve had this phone for a LOOONG time now, got it when it first came out so I’m sure my warranty is up. Please help…
